Evolution Absurdity Part 2: The Problem of Abiogenesis
The one thing that stops the theory of evolution before it even begins
A lot of people, both Christians and unbelievers, hold to the theory of evolution. For Christians, it’s a very simple Biblical debate, but what about unbelievers?
Isn’t evolution a proven scientific fact? It’s in all the textbooks, that means it’s true, right? In this series of posts, I’m going to cover the major problems that have faced the theory of evolution from the beginning.
Today I’ll be talking about the problem of abiogenesis
Abiogenesis Defined
Abiogenesis is defined as this:
“the original evolution of life of living organisms from inorganic or inanimate substances”
The Problem
Here’s the problem of abiogenesis written out for us to take a look at:
1. If evolution were true, life would have had to been created from non-life in a truly random circumstance.
2. It is not possible to generate life from non-life.
3. Therefore, evolution cannot be true
Let’s hash out the details of this problem.
1. Life from Non-Life
There are many Origin of Life studies that aim to show life could have formed by itself, and without a creator.
Well, to do that, you need proteins, and to make proteins you need amino acids, and when you manufacture amino acids in a laboratory…
You run into the issue of Chirality.
Basically, amino acids can appear in left-handed, and right-handed forms. These are named based on the shape they make.
The problem?
In the formation of life, amino acids are exclusively left-handed form. Yet, in a laboratory setting, manufacturing amino acids generates a mixture of left & right-handed forms.
If life spontaneously generated from some warm pond somewhere, that life would be made from the amino acids made in a non-living environment.
If you try to make proteins out of a random collection of amino acids, you will get a mixture of left and right-handed amino acids jumbled together… which does not support life. Life is exclusively supported by left-handed forms.
Now some researchers try to construct a “filtering” system that separates the left from the right-handed amino acids. That way, they can have an exclusive collection of left-handed amino acids to create life from.
Well, for thermodynamics-related reasons, when these filtering systems separate the amino acids, some of the left-handed amino acids will spontaneously change into the right-handed form.
In other words? You cannot generate life from non-life.
In fact, Abiogenesis is classified as an obsolete view in many technical journals today.
2. The Math Problem
The Mathematical probability that random mutation produced complex living organisms from simpler chemical forms is infinitesimally small, even given billions of years.
Mutations are almost always harmful to an organism in its natural environment.
We’re not just talking about Christians beating evolutionists over the head with their Bibles, but secular mathematicians who have serious issues with the theory of evolution.
A number of Mathematicians in 1967 published their academic papers under the title “Mathematical Challenges to the Neo-Darwinian Interpretation of Evolution”
In fact, one of the books published, authored by Eden Murray, was titled “Inadequacies of Neo-Darwinism Evolution as a Scientific Theory”
Here’s a quote from Eden in this piece:
“It is our contention, that if the word “random” is given a serious and crucial interpretation, from a probabilistic point of view, the randomness postulate is highly implausible, and that an adequate scientific theory of evolution must await the discovery and elucidation of new natural laws.” -Eden Murray
These mathematicians are applying probability to the theory of evolution. Given a true random force (God is not behind it), there isn’t nearly enough time, even billions of years, for this to have happened. So, any scientific theory of evolution, for it to be possible in the first place, would rely on the discovery of new natural laws.
Going further, here is what Michael Denton points out in his book “Evolution: A Theory in Crisis”
To get one cell by chance would require at least 100 functional proteins to appear simultaneously in one place.
The independent probability of any particular protein appearing is going to be hardly more than 10^-20.
If you gamble at Las Vegas and somebody offers you a probability of 1 in 10, those are bad odds. What about 1 in a 100? Well those are exceptionally bad odds. Let’s go even deeper, what about 1 in a 1,000? Surely you’d be mad to even touch that game.
Well according to Denton, the chance of one protein appearing is 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000,000. But…that’s only one protein. You need at least 100 proteins for one cell to form.
Denton pointed out that the maximum combined probability would be 1-in-10^2,000. Can you imagine 2,000 zeros at the end of the number? It’s almost incomprehensible. And what would that achieve? One cell.
Other scientists, Hoyle and Wickramasinghe in the 1981 book “Evolution from Space” calculated there are about 2,000 enzymes, so the chance of obtaining them all at a random trial is only 1-in-10^40,000.
The Real Issue
So if abiogenesis is mathematically improbable, and also has no observable evidence of happening in nature, why is the theory of evolution still kicking around? Doesn’t this just remove the possibility of evolution entirely?
Like I’ve said in the past posts in this series, the reason evolution is still a reigning dogma of the secular community is because people want evolution to be true.
If evolution is true, you and I…we can do whatever we want. Who cares? Aren’t we all just broccoli anyway?
When you see someone worshipping money running their business…let them do what they want
When you see someone disrespecting their parents…let them do what they want
Because its all just a bunch of matter floating around anyway, right?
When you reject God, you are left with absurdity. Things get so bad, that you actually claim scientific theories to be true that, from the beginning, have no observable evidence of ever happening.
This is the state that we are left with when we reject Jesus.
16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.
18 “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. 19And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. 20All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. 21But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.”John 3:16-21
If you do not currently follow the one true God, the one that made you in his image, the beginning and the end…
Today might be your day for salvation. God has told us that by believing in what he has done for us, we can turn to him, and have eternal life. He will literally give you a new heart and remove the evil one that you once had.
